Mississippi State University students will soon elect another
president, but MSU President J. Charles Lee will not be running in
this election.
Elections for Student Association executive officers will take
place March 25 with a runoff on April 1. Forms of intent were
released Tuesday and will be due in the SA office by March 5.
Elections Commissioner Nyerere Tryman said it is important for
students to let their voices be heard in this election.
“(The executive officers) are the people who will determine what
direction the university will go in, and I think that makes this
election very important,” Tryman said.
However, Tryman said those running should be ready for a
challenge.
“A candidate needs to be dedicated,” Tryman said. “They will
have many long nights in the SA Office. An example of that is the
Fall Break resolution that is currently being considered by the
university. Many people have put in long hours of research and
study into the creation of that bill. Time will tell if that work
pays off.”
Tryman said the upcoming officers will also take on the duty of
strengthening ties between the university and the city of
Starkville.
Students will elect the student body president, vice-president,
secretary, attorney general and treasurer in the election. The
ballot will also include the election of the senior class
president.
Those wishing to run for officers must be at least a sophomore,
except for the president, who must be at least a junior.
Student Association President Parker Wiseman said he is eager to
see who will be taking the lead after he graduates.
“I’ve enjoyed being able to serve my fellow students at MSU as
SA president,” Wiseman said. “I think we have seen a lot done, and
we will see even more done by the end of this semester. But it is
time for the students to choose new leaders who can keep working
toward improving student life and the overall quality of our
university.”
