While the headliners for Super Bulldog Weekend activities might be football and baseball, another sport deserves some attention this Saturday. The men’s and women’s track teams will be hosting the Jace Lacoste Invitational at the W. O. Spencer Stadium. This is a great opportunity for fans to show their support to athletes who do not normally get a lot of attention but definitely deserve it.
“This is a situation where kids can run some different races,” Coach Al Schmidt said. “We are going to run the first team in the 4×100 meter race so they can cut loose on their home track.”
There will be a lot of high quality athletes on display this weekend from MSU. Senior Pierre Brown is currently ranked first nationally in the 100-meter race, while junior Marquis Davis earned a number one ranking for the 200-meter event. Brown is actually second nationally in the 200, while Davis is second in the 100. On the women’s side, sophomore Tiffany McWilliams is second nationally in the 1500-meter event, and the women’s distance medley relay is the favorite for the national championship.
Of course Schmidt and the teams are looking forward to being able to perform in front of some MSU fans.
“I hope the fans can come over and take a look at us, Schmidt said. “The people that rank us feel like we have a chance to win the national championship. This will give the fans a chance to see these kids run.”
The Bulldogs will bring a lot of momentum into the meet this weekend. They recently competed at the prestigious Texas relays. Both Davis and Browne earned an NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the 100-meter dash. Senior Kelvin Harris also earned the qualifying mark in the 110-meter hurdles, as well as the men’s 4×100-meter relay team. McWilliams took second in 1500-meter event at Texas, while the women’s medley relay team took first and set a school record.
With all the activities this weekend, the track meet might get overlooked. However, with a number four ranking on the men’s side and a couple of championship contenders with the women, everyone should check out these athletes in action. The field events will start around 10 a.m., while the running should start a little after noon.
