When most people think of a poetry reading, they probably envison a Seattle coffee shop filled with intellectual college students. Actually, you don’t need to go that far to hear a good poetry reading or to get that kind of atmosphere. Mississippi State University offers students the chance to attend a poetry reading right here on campus.
Campus Activities Board, in conjunction with Iota Phi Theta, present Poetry Night to give students a chance to express themselves in a peer friendly environment. Poetry Night is not new to Mississippi State. It has been around since Iota Phi Theta started it in 1998.
CAB started sponsoring the event at the beginning of the 2003 spring semester. Since CAB decided to join Poetry Night, they have been holding it in The Union’s Dawg House Coffee Shoppe.
Meeting once or twice a month on Wednesday nights, Poetry Night has been an enormous success. It has only been put on five or six times this semester, but the average turnout has reached almost 50 people.
The event gives students the opportunity to read original poetry as well as published works, and everything in between.
“Poetry Night gives students who write poetry an outlet to share their work and get some feedback,” said Campus Activities Board Director Kelly Nesbit. “It is good for those who are interested in hearing it.”
With school winding down, students getting ready to leave for the summer and exams coming up fast, Wednesday night was the last opportunity to attend Poetry Night this semester. Luckily, Poetry Night will be back in the fall.
CAB is putting on several other activities for students to attend before school lets out for summer. April 15 will give students the opportunity to attend a screening of the movie “Remember the Titans” and meet the coaches who inspired it. On April 24, Cab will be out on The Drill Field with inflatable games and lots of fun. They will also be serving lunch.
In addition to Poetry Night, Campus Activities Board will host Improv Night, Open Mic Night, Speed Dating and many other events.
