MSU students rank high in nation with 80 ‘Who’s Who’ awards

One of the most renowned honors programs in the nation has
announced its annual selections for outstanding achievements by
    Mississippi State University students.
Some 80 undergraduate seniors have been selected for the 2002-03
Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
“I was really glad to find out I was accepted,” senior Russ
McNees said. “Who’s Who is a really respected organization and
    looks great on a resume.”
The Who’s Who organization is based out of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and
publishes a national directory each year of college students who
are accepted. Students are nominated by their institutions on the
basis of academic achievement, community service, leadership in
extracurricular activities and potential for continued
    success.
“Who’s Who really represents a brief overview of your
accomplishments while at Mississippi State,” senior Brooke Bliss
said. “It has always been recognized throughout the nation as a
representative of outstanding leaders on college campuses.”
The MSU Student Association is in charge of the application
process for Who’s Who awards. Deadlines for accepting applications
usually falls around the end of October.
MSU applications follow specific criteria: Students must be
seniors with a 2.75 GPA, completed at least 87 hours prior to the
fall semester of applying and must be graduating by the second
summer session of the following year.
“The application asks for current and past activities,
leadership, participation, special recognition and honors
received,” Student Association office manager Donna Maykowski said.
“They also look for community involvement.”
“Who’s Who has been around forever and gives nationally
recognized status to students. It really is a prestigious honor,”
    Maykowski said.
This honor is conferred by more than 1,900 schools in all 50
states and has been annually awarded to students since 1934.
