The Logan Canyon Winds, a Utah-based wind quintet, will perform
in concert today in the McComas Hall Theatre at 7:30 p.m.
The Logan Winds ensemble performs music ranging from light 20th
century classical to historical styles and often includes music
from various cultures.
The ensemble has appeared throughout the Rocky Mountain Region
as well as in Florida. They were featured at the American
Orff-Schulwerk Association national conferences in Tampa and
Cincinnati.
In addition to the concert tonight, the ensemble will present a
series of humorous programs for Starkville area children in
kindergarten through fourth grades. Students in the Starkville
school district, Oktibbeha County schools and Starkville Academy
were invioted to attend the programs on Monday and today in the
Greensboro Center Auditorium.
“We selected the group in conjunction with activities in the
community. The Starkville-MSU Symphony Association wanted us to
help sponsor the concert,” Brenda Neubauer, coordinator of lyceum
programming said. “We decided to bring them to benefit the students
on campus as well as the children of the Starkville area.”
The wind quintet, in residence at Utah State University,
includes Leslie Timmons on flute, Susan Swidnicki on oboe, Nicholas
Morrison on clarinet, Carolyn Bodily on bassoon and Craig Knutson
on horn.
Timmons and Bodily remain as the only original members of the
quintet. All of the current members have played with numerous other
artists and orchestras. Swidnicki regularly plays with the Utah
symphony; Morrison appeared alongside the Orchestra Philharmonique
Ste. Trinit in Haiti. Knutson helped establish the Portneuf
Brass quintet; Bodily performed with Utah Festival Opera Company
and Timmons appeared with Lansing Symphony Orchestra.
The ensemble has also agreed to conduct classes for the
university.
“Last night, they did a master class and every Wednesday the
music department sponsors a recital hour in Bettersworth Auditorium
of Giles Hall and the the ensemble are the guest performers,”
Neubauer said.
Graduate assistant for the Lyceum department, Taylor Harris says
he enjoys the group coming to perform.
“I think it’s going to be an enjoyable event. It’s a change of
pace for things here in Starkville,” Harris said. “It’ll help to
break up the monotony of things.”
Tickets for the program cost $6 for adults, $4 for senior
citizens, $2 for children ages 3-12 and MSU students watch for free
if they bring student identification. For more information on the
