Mississippi State sophomore pitcher Paul Maholm of Holly Springs, Miss., will be Arizona-bound at the end of the 2002 season. The Bulldog left-hander is among 19 college players invited to participate in the 2002 USA Baseball National Team Trials to be held June 18-23 in Tucson, Ariz.
This year’s USA National Team will play a 30-game summer schedule and compete in both the Haarlem Baseball Week tournament in the Netherlands and the first ever FISU World Collegiate Championships in Messina, Italy.
Maholm (7-1, 3.34) is one of only three Southeastern Conference players among the initial invitees. This year’s USA National Team will be selected from a pool of 35-40 players and announced June 24. LSU infielder Aaron Hill and South Carolina catcher Landon Powell have also been invited to the trial sessions.
