Even though it’s getting colder outside, some students take their water sports seriously.
Students Sarah Hill, Taylor Mathis and Tyler Young have started the MSU Water Sports Association for anyone interested in wakeboarding and waterskiing.
Mathis and Young, friends since childhood, have talked about starting up a collegiate team in the past. After talking to Hill, the three decided that it would be a worthwhile endeavor.
“A lot of people have a good time doing it,” Mathis said. “We didn’t see any reason why we couldn’t put a team together.”
The team plans to participate in local tournaments as well as collegiate-sanctioned competitions against schools such as Texas, LSU, Ole Miss and Central Florida.
“Local tourneys are held in Columbus, Southaven … all over,” Young said.
The club will not only travel all over the state, but will also travel across the Southeast to ski in different events.
The club welcomes riders of all levels, from Beginner to Expert, so anyone interested in joining can have the chance to participate.
Wakeboarding and waterskiing is also a fantastic way to get in shape. The way the rope pulls on your arms and the balance needed to stay upright in the water works your body out like nothing else quite can.
It is also a great way to meet new friends
“We’d like a good, competitive group, but it’s always good to have a boatload of people,” Mathis said.
“Anyone interested is encouraged to come out,” said Hill, who also participated in the Make-A-Wish Ski-Freeze in Memphis on Jan. 1 in freezing temperatures.
The team has scheduled a general interest meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Union in the small auditorium.
