The Mississippi State and Ole Miss golf teams, along with alumni from both schools, gathered this weekend for the first ever Magnolia Cup at the Old Waverly Country Club.
Mississippi State battled Ole Miss in the collegiate competition while the alumni battled each other.
After the 18-hole event was complete, Ole Miss emerged as the collegiate winner while MSU took home the title for the Alumni. The Rebels edged the Bulldogs by two strokes after shooting an impressive 11-under 277.
MSU was led by sophomore Michael Knight who shot a 65. “I hit the ball really well today and just tried to play shot-by-shot,” Knight said. “It was fun to play with guys that have been through some of the same experiences at MSU.”
MSU freshmen Matt Fast and Carlos Sanz Jr. both shot a 70 while Noah Goldman fired a 74. Greg Huxman shot a 74 and Logan Young fired a 75 to round out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
Ole Miss was led by Jamie Howarth, who fired a 67. Kyle Ellis fired a 69, while Derek Abel and Callum Macaulay both shot a 70.
“We played pretty well today.” MSU head coach Clay Homan said. “Ole Miss just played a few shots better than we did. The good thing is we did not beat ourselves.”
The event, serving as a fund-raiser, raised around $20,000 for both golf programs.
