8 p.m. show in Animal Husbandry Service Building
Advance tickets now on sale at Union desk
The final concert for the 1964-65 term sponsored by the Student Association will feature composer-singer Johnny Cash May 10 at 8:00 in the Animal Husbandry Building. Tickets sell for $2.00 in advance and $2.50 at the door.
Endowed with a vibrant baritone voice Johnny will play a return engagement on the MSU campus. In a poll conducted during the 1963-’64 school year it was revealed that the students selected this country and Western folk singer as the performer they most wanted for a return engagement.
It is only recently that Country music has begun to be taken seriously on a nation-wide scale. This fact is attributed to the rapid acceptance of its style after the appearance of several Grand Ole Opry stars at Carnegie Hall. Johnny Cash ranks at the top of this group.
Some of the familiar tunes will include “Orange Blossom Special,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “When It’s Spring-Ttime In Alaska” and his famed “I’ll Walk the Line.”
Most people who hear Johnny Cash for the first time begin to speculate on what kind of person he is; they are initially struck by the force of a powerful and unique personality which colors each song he sings. He is not bland and has never been what some folk scholars would consider a purist. But he is several other important things; “an immensely exciting singer and actor, a gifted composer and something of a philosopher.”
They say it takes a worried man to sing a worried song. Maybe that’s why Johnny Cash is so successful.
