On September 5 doors of Cresswell Hall, the largest residency yet constructed at Mississippi State University, were opened. From the halls of what Dean of Women, Francis Lee, calls “…a monument-loudly acclaiming the fact that girls are here to stay at M.S.U.”, came joyous sounds of ooh and ah as girls with parents, friends and citizens of Starkville scurried around to see the many modern and beautifully new features of this million dollar air conditioned construction which the residents have dubbed “Cresswell Hilton”.
Features of the dormitory include sundecks, lounges and laundry rooms on each floor, elevators, private telephones if desired, indirect lighting, furnished draperies which totaled $4,000 and soon to be installed hair dryers.
Dean Lee who considers the new dormitory her pride and joy and who has worked with the planning of the building from drawing board to finish had this to say, “Cresswell Hall is second to none in the state. Housing approximately 400 girls, we have one of the largest, most modern to be found on any university campus.”
Dedicatory service for Cresswell Hall, named in memory of Miss May Cresswell, a teacher in the Home Economics extension service for 25 years, is tentatively scheduled as is a formal “Open House” now in the planning stages.
Most people, however, haven’t waited for the formal housewarming and Cresswell has quickly become the favorite campus site for many students, so much so that Dr. Colvard jokingly rechecked to be sure it was a girls’ dorm and not occupied by boys. One of the people most responsible for this friendly, inviting atmosphere has been Mrs. Virginia Allsbrook, housemother of all girls who make State their home.
The importance of Cresswell Hall lies not so much with the construction of a modern efficient building but more with the spirit of recognition that has come with the felt need to encourage coeds to the campus and to provide them with the type of campus atmosphere conducive to their putting the most into their lives as university students.
