This Saturday, the Mississippi State University Blitz! Show Choir will take its audience back to the Power Rangers decade with its performance of “I love the ’90s.” Several Blitz! members said they believe this is their favorite show so far.
Blitz! member Lauren Holt, said, “The songs from the nineties were great and I think the audience will love the show.”
Even though the members are involved in different activities, each member’s dedication is displayed in the performances.
The performance will feature a medley of songs by both girl and boy bands. Blitz! voted on a theme, and an overwhelming majority chose “I love the ’90s.” During their performance, they will be sporting attire from the decade. Cade Holder, Blitz! president, is in charge of song arrangements and clothing. Pulling a gold scrunchie out of a plastic bag, Holder said, “Recently, I have been trying to gather clothing that look like gaudy clothes worn in the ’90s.”
The dance routines involved in the showchoir’s performance are very technical. Some of the guys will lift girls in the air.
“It seems like we learned a new dance routine along with a song every night of practice,” Holt said.
Every night of the week is dedicated to practices with the exception of Wednesday. Usually, the show choir performs songs to an 8-count (faster) beat. However, “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls will be performed to a 3-count beat. The team has a significant knowledge of dance. Growing up, Holder took dance classes such as tap, jazz and ballet, which helps her as she choreographs the songs. Holt, a twirler for the Famous Maroon Band, has been twirling since she was seven.
“I have always enjoyed performing in front of people since I began twirling,” Holt said.
Besides dancing, some of the show choir members have shown off their instrumental abilities during some of the performances. Kiefer Slaton will be playing the guitar on the Boys to Men song “More than Words” for a boys’ performance. In past performances, some members have played the piano to give a break from the karaoke tracks. Blitz! tries to add its own twist to songs.
Holder said, “We want to make every song sound different from what they would hear on the radio.”
“Glee” might have helped the fan base for Blitz! Although many members of Blitz! are fans of “Glee,” they believe they are different from “Glee.” Every episode of “Glee” emphasizes choir competitions, but Blitz does not compete in competitions.
“There is a possibility in the future that we might participate in competitions in several years as Blitz! grows,” Holder said. However, the support Blitz! has earned is impressive considering it began in the spring semester of 2010. Blitz! began when Blake Garrett sent a Facebook message to his friends to ask them if they would like to start a show choir at MSU.
“On Saturday’s show, I do expect a little bit of stress and the jitters, but it will be the best Blitz! performance,” Holder said.
“I love the ’90s” will be performed at the Greensboro Center at the crossing of Greensboro Street and Louisville at 5 p.m. this Saturday. Tickets will be $4 for children 12 and under, $5 for students and $7 for adults.
