Tom Anagnost lead the Mississippi State University soccer team to its first NCAA appearance this season, and just like that–he is gone. Anagnost became head coach two years ago, but his time with the team has come to an end following his resignation, according to a press release sent out by the university.
“This personal decision has been the biggest and most difficult of my life,” Anagnost said. “Mississippi State is a remarkable place filled with the most wonderful people in the world. I want to thank (Director of Athletics) John Cohen, (Deputy Athletic Director) Jared Benko and (Senior Associate Athletic Director) Jay Logan who have always been there to serve our program.”
Whoever takes over the reigns next definitely has a promising group of players, as the team won 18 games the past two seasons, as well as making the NCAA tournament and SEC tournament this year. Anagnost said he leaves behind a great group of athletes.
“This young team has great kids who are prepared to win in the SEC,” Anagnost said. “I know the next head coach here will be an incredibly fortunate person.”
Cohen said Anagnost did well as a coach at MSU, and the athletic department respects his decision to resign.
“We respect his decision and we appreciate his efforts in shaping our program into a winner,” Cohen said. “We wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors both personally and professionally. We have already begun a national search to identify our next head coach who will continue the positive momentum this program has established.”
As for now, assistant coach Josh Rife will be the interim head coach. Student athletes were not available for comment as they are still on Christmas break and will not be back until Monday.
