Although Student Association presidential candidate Blake Jeter is running unopposed in today’s election, he has been busy laying out a foundation of goals for next year’s SA.
The junior biomedical engineering major from Brandon is running on a platform focus of improving each student’s experience.
“My job next year as SA president is not going to be to make the SA look good. It’s to improve your experience,” he said. “Everything we do is for a purpose. We’re going to evaluate everything we do in the SA and if it doesn’t improve a student’s experience, we just need to cut it.”
As SA president he wants to address five key issues: textbooks, athletics, environmental issues, transportation and involvement.
On his Web site, Jeter includes links under each issue for students to respond and give him feedback on his ideas.
Jeter also said he wants to improve the relationship between students and the city of Starkville.
“If you have a good relationship with the city, you can have a lot of things done,” he said. “In order for us to receive some benefits, we’re going to have to give more.”
Jeter said one way he hopes the SA will give more to the city is through a new idea called “The Big Event,” a day devoted to community service. During the event, students will help members of the Starkville community with anything they need done in their yards or homes.
“Hopefully [this project] will build the comaraderie between students and the city of Starkville,” he said. “It’s in the works right now. Our freshman council [group of 25 student leaders] has been working on this and they’re planning on getting it done the Friday of Super Bulldog Weekend.”
Along with being SA Attorney General, Jeter is a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Before he was attorney general, he was director of campus outreach. He also served as an alumni delegate and freshman class president.
