Mississippi State University’s Department of Communication will host a golf tournament Oct. 12 to raise money for communication scholarships. “The main reason we are doing this golf tournament is to raise money for scholarships. We do not have continuing money set aside for freshmen and transfer students and would one day like to have more available to them,” department head John Forde said.
“We were looking for a way to raise money and the golf course associates had mentioned they wanted more tournaments at their course, so we thought it would be a great opportunity to have the communication department host a tournament,” Forde said.
The tournament is open to the public and anyone who would like to play is welcome to participate.
“Anyone who is a friend, student, faculty, alumni or connected to the communication department in any way is encouraged to register,” Forde said.
The cost for the tournament is $55 per person or $220 per team.
The price includes greens fees, golf carts, practice balls, a meal and possible prizes throughout the day such as merchandise certificates.
The preferred early registration deadline is Sept. 28 but if there is still open space, late registration is available.
“We hope to have a huge number,” he said. “We are limited to 144 players and I hope that becomes a problem and we have to close registration for the tournament.”
Forde said he is still looking for sponsors and players.
Registration forms, sponsor forms and videos about the tournament are available to be downloaded on the communication department’s Web site, www.comm.msstate.edu.
Forde said he hopes the golf tournament will help people become more involved in the communication department.
He also said he hopes students become more educated about the communication major and its various concentrations, which include communication studies, journalism, broadcasting, public relations and theater.
“We want to get information out about our department because potential students often come in not knowing much about our major or the concentrations we offer within the communication department,” Forde said.
The expected turnout for the tournament is highly anticipated to be a large number, he said.
Forde said he is hoping for the tournament to become an annual event that will include a large amount of involvement from the university and Starkville community.
“If the tournament goes well, which we think it will, we plan to make this an annual event,” Forde said.
