The state College Board approved the appointment of a Mississippi State University alumnus to the board in its regular January meeting.
Gov. Haley Barbour appointed the member, Roy Estess of Carriere, to replace Roy Klumb of Gulfport, who resigned in December for personal reasons, an IHL press release said. Klumb’s term will expire May 7, 2008.
Estess must now receive confirmation from the state Senate.
Estess graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in aerospace engineering. He retired from his position as director of John C. Stennis Space Center in 2002 after 13 years in that position.
“I am pleased to welcome our new board member,” College Board President Virginia Shanteau-Newton said in the press release. “He comes to us with a wealth of professional experience in a large, complex organization, much like our institutions.”
Estess described himself as a long-time supporter of the institutions of higher learning in Mississippi and said he realizes their importance in preparing young people for the future and conducting research.
“I just hope to add my abilities to the board in pushing forward the university systems,” he said.
