The Mississippi State softball team finished their fall ball schedule with an impressive 8-0 record.
The softball team showed both strong hitting and pitching performances Saturday, defeating Belhaven, 13-1 and University of Alabama-Huntsville, 4-3. MSU pitchers gave up only seven hits the entire day.
Stephanie Comeaux and Sara Hickerson combined for a two-hitter in the Belhaven game, striking out seven hitters. Kelli Miller was the winning pitcher against Alabama-Huntsville, striking out two hitters while allowing only five hits.
State batters hit .411, led by junior shortstop Courtney Bures. Bures was 4-for-4 for the day with six RBIs.
The Alabama-Huntsville Chargers started out strong in Saturday’s second game, scoring three runs in the first inning. In the fifth inning, senior rightfielder Michelle Kinney reached on a throwing error by a pitcher and came around to score. Freshman Chelsea Bramlett tied the game on a wild pitch, and Courtney Bures doubled to get the lead.
MSU softball team also swept the second day of the tournament on Sunday, defeating Alabama-Huntsville, 9-4 and Jones Junior College, 14-1.
MSU pitchers gave up only five hits for the day. Jessie Bailey struck out three and allowed only four hits in the win against Alabama-Huntsville, while Sara Hickerson struck out 10 hitters in the win against Jones, allowing only one hit.
Senior second baseman Katie Johnson was 4-for-8 on the day, with two runs and four RBIs. Freshman Chelsea Bramlett finished the day with six hits and four runs. Junior centerfielder Hayle Guess also had a strong showing on Sunday, with three hits and four RBIs.
In the Alabama-Huntsville game, State scored four times in the first inning. Alabama-Huntsville got two runs back in the third inning, but MSU scored four times in the bottom of the third and another run in the sixth.
Against Jones, MSU scored four runs in the first inning, once in the third, three in the fourth, four in the fifth and twice in the sixth.
MSU softball concludes its fall season Friday with the alumni game at 7 p.m.
