Fourth Spring Fling features acoustic rocker Tim Blane

This Earth Day, students have an opportunity to eat free crawfish, listen to music from Tim Blane and local band Sixty207, and have a chance to participate in recycling during the fourth annual Spring Fling. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, Residence Hall Association and MSU’s Bulldog Recycling Club takes place today at 4 p.m. in the Junction.
“The main musician we are having is going to be Tim Blane, and he starts at 5 p.m.,” said CAB special events division head Patty Commarato.
She said Blane’s music sounds like a mixture of rock, jazz and blues.
Opening for Blane is Sixty207, who won crowd favorite at CAB’s Battle of the Bands, Commarato said.
“We have inflatables,” she said. “We have the gladiator joust, the 52-foot obstacle course and the bungee run. Then we also have the bungee trampoline.”
There will be a caricaturist, Steve Gipson, at the Junction as well, Commarato said.
RHA and the recycling club are helping to provide crawfish and recycling bins, she said.
“We gave money to pay for the crawfish and we are providing volunteers to help with the event,” said RHA president Autumn Nourse.
Last year more people attended than expected, she said.
“It was a lot of fun. There were a lot of people. It was festive and a stress relief before finals,” Nourse said.
She said she thinks people are looking forward to this year’s Spring Fling now that it is an annual event.
When the Recycling Club was formed this year, CAB got the group involved in helping cans get recycled instead of thrown away, said Recycling Club president Cami Anderson.
“I got an e-mail from Patty [Commarato] asking if we would be interested in co-sponsoring the Spring Fling and at the time we had no money in our budget,” Anderson said.
Since then she said the Student Association gave money, the recycling members paid dues and the Challenge X team offered to help the recycling club buy recycling bins for events on campus.
“The Challenge X team is the reason that we were able to get the bins and get the logos on the bins in time,” Anderson said.
They will be placing the bins next to the trash cans so that it will be easy for students to recycle cans rather than just throwing them away, she said.
She said Earth Day is a big reason for the Recycling Club to be involved in an event.
“Another big reason is to just get our name out there and let people know there is a program for recycling on campus and to get more people involved,” Anderson said.
Following the event, recyclables will be transported to Starkville Recycling, she said.
“CAB is going to be mostly responsible, but we’re going to try to get some volunteers to help out with the clean-up after and maybe during to switch out some bags,” Anderson said.
Commarato said the event is free to anyone who wants to attend.
“This is our last big event that we have,” she said.
She said she hopes it goes well and everyone has a great time.
“I hope it keeps going every year and people get excited about it,” Commarato said.
