The Streetcarliterary journal will be a creative arts journal for Mississippi State University that will be completely run by students and will publish only student work as well as promote creativity among students of all majors.
Editor in chief and junior English and Spanish major, Hannah Humphrey, said Streetcarwill hopefully publish its first journal at the end of next semester and steps are already being made to put this first issue together.
According to Humphrey, the purpose of Streetcaris three-fold, but the overall goal is promoting creativity.
“First, we wanted to create and develop a community for creative thinkers on Mississippi State’s campus. The second point is that we want to encourage creativity across the disciplines of Mississippi State, so we want each individual department and within each major to develop creativity,” she said. “The third is, because a lot of us are English majors, just to increase the knowledge and availability of things literary.”
Co-editor in chief, Field Brown, junior English and philosophy major, said this journal is not intended only for English majors to submit their work but for anyone in any major.
“It’s really for anybody, so we want anybody that likes to draw or take pictures or anything,” Brown said.
Humphrey said submissions can be anything from artwork to poetry to short stories or nonfiction.
“This is just for students, so we’re looking for art work and poetry, short stories, nonfiction or any kind of creative work that students can submit,” Humphrey said. “If you think it’s creative and new and refreshing we’ll probably think it is, too.”
Students are also looking forward to the publication of the new literary journal.
Emerson Holliman, sophomore Spanish major, said she is excited about Streetcarbecause it encourages students to get more involved on campus.
“I think the streetcar will be great for our school because it will give students an opportunity to speak out and share their thoughts and ideas,” Holiman said.
The name Streetcarwas the idea of one of the staff members of the literary journal.
It was inspired by famous Mississippi writer Tennessee Williams’s play, “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Humphrey and Brown both said they encourage students to submit their work for Streetcar to Humphrey at [email protected].
