Sororities at Mississippi State University as a whole exemplify service and philanthropic dedication.
Jackie Mullen, director of Student Activities, said sororities are strongly involved in community service regarding their philanthropies.
“What sororities do to give back is not specified on just their organization,” Mullen said. “It’s based on giving back to the community and how we have helped as a whole.”
Melissa Barnett, president of the National Panhellenic Council, said sorority members persistently participate in activities.
“Relay for Life is a good example of what all the sororities are into,” Barnett said, “Some people think it’s a Greek thing to give back, but although it is a part of the philanthropy, it is a natural goal to desire to help MSU and all of the community.”
Mullen said sororities seem to have a higher interest in doing things as a group in regard to community service, and she expands on past activities.
“This year we will be working on a Greek Week that establishes community service initiatives for all Greek students,” Mullen said. “Also, sororities have gone downtown to do children’s face painting, trick-or-treat on the row and a Halloween carnival. They are really engaged in making the children happy.”
Lowell Rose, publicity chairman of National Pan Hellenic Council, said she commends sororities on their passion for philanthropy.
“Sororities are always out doing something, whether it’s a step show or a cinnamon roll night,” Rose said. “Their dedication expresses their huge passion for community service and truly giving back.”
Rose said community service and other initiatives are not simplified to each fraternity or sorority individually.
“Our philanthropy and service brings awareness about special needs and other things that the public may not know about,” Rose said, “It is up to us to try and make a difference and give back to the community.”
