Stress is a major problem among college students. Focusing on various activities such as studying and after-school jobs can take a tol on the body and mind. Even being away from home for long periods of time can contribute to the amount of stress one experiences.
Learning to cope and control stress could be the diffenence between a cheerful disposition and a nervous breakdown.
Senior educational psychology major Caroline Cain has learned to control stress by participating in Yoga exercises.
“Yoga eases the body, mind and spirit and at the same time helps you develop soothing breathing techniques,” Cain said.
The more active the body is, the better. Exercise will not only take stress off your back; it can also boost energy and clear the mind.
Another form of reducing stress is prioritizing daily or weekly activities. For example, instead of waiting until the day an assignment is due, go ahead and schedule an appropriate amount of time to have everything done sufficiently. Rank activities by their list of importance and complete the more pressing tasks first. once those have been completed, run down the list and complete the others.
“When I am feeling really stressed out, I just go home and take a nap,” senior Krystalyn Brown said.
If money and time are of no consequence, considering a therapeutic massage can provide customers personal one-on-one services and a relaxing atmosphere. Ryan Sykes, Massage Therapist at Awakening Spirit Massage of Starkville encourages students to come in for various massage sessions.
“Students are overexurting themselves,” Sykes said. “A massage will help lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and the hand-on contact can also be a stress reliever.”
Relieving stress can be as simple as organizing time, and remebering to give the body plenty of rest.
