For the second year in a row despite three-win seasons, the Mississippi State football team got an early commitment from the No. 1 Mississippi High School football prospect.
Last season, Jerious Norwood made his commitment known before the February signing day and proved to play a large role for the Bulldogs this year. Yesterday, Noxubee County High School’s quarterback Omarr Conner added his name to the MSU commitment list and made Bulldog fans very happy.
Despite being recruited by most of the country, Conner narrowed his choices to MSU, Mississippi and West Virginia before adding his name to the Bulldog faithful. Conner, the Mississippi record holder for touchdowns accounted for in a season with 54, will be joined in Maroon and White by his favorite target from Noxubee County, Joey Sanders.
Conner used his 6-foot-1-inch frame, strong arm and 4.5 speed to dazzle opponents and recruiters during the past year. This past season Conner totaled 4,146 yards to go along with the 54 touchdowns. Conner completed 170 of 299 passes for a total of 3,374 and 31 passing scores and rushed for nearly 700 yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.
Sanders, 6-foot-2-inches and 200 pounds, is considered by many sources to be the top receiver in Mississippi. Sanders caught 19 touchdowns this past season, one short of the state record, returned kicks and occasionally played defense for Noxubee County.
With the two latest commitments the Bulldog coaching staff has put together 22 commitments for the upcoming February 5 national signing day. The coaches have done well in Mississippi at gathering commitments including the top offensive line prospect from Mississippi, Donovan Davis of Calloway, and the top two defensive line prospects, Devrick Hampton of Greenville-Weston and Corey Clark of Collins.
The Bulldogs have also gone out of state to grab some of the nation’s top talent from Alabama and Georgia. Jeramie Johnson of Atlanta and Adrian Griffin of LeGrange, Ga., are considered two of the top cornerbacks in the nation.
MSU also recently received a commitment from 6-foot-1 225-pound Jason Jude, a running back from Athens, Ala considered one of the top two running backs in Alabama.
With most of the recruiting process out of the way, Bulldog fans are anxiously awaiting the decision of the rest of the top talent from Mississippi. On most wish lists for MSU fans are Quinton Culberson of Provine, who is considered as the best defensive back in Mississippi, and Quentin Groves, who is considered the best defensive end. Both Groves and Culberson have yet to announce their decisions.
