The Reflector: A lot of athletes rely on pre-match rituals. Do you? Misty Hubenthal: Not really. I just go to the team meal. We load up on carbs usually from Old Venice, City Bagel, or Bulldog Deli. On the road, we go to the Olive Garden. Then, I prepare mentally by studying the opponents. I’m not really superstitious, but if I am coming off a good game, I might wear my hair the same way.
The Reflector: The best food in the world is…
MH: Chicken and dumplings, or anything sweet.
The Reflector: The best downtime activity (away from the courts and books) is…
MH: I like to spend time with my fiancZ, Chris Young, and my pinscher, Reese.
The Reflector: That’s an interesting name for a dog.
MH: My brother and I noticed how he resembled a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup.
The Reflector: Your five favorite movies are…
MH: “While You Were Sleeping,” “Serendipity,” “The Green Mile,” “Men of Honor,” “Coyote Ugly.”
The Reflector: Chris doesn’t mind sitting through “chick flicks?”
MH: We alternate who chooses the movie.
The Reflector: What is the best part about MSU/Starkville?
MH: The campus is beautiful and the people are friendly. People that I have never seen before have said “Hi” to me and smiled.
The Reflector: The worst?
MH: There are not that many activities, and there is not much shopping around here.
The Reflector: What is your favorite store?
MH: Express.
The Reflector: What is the biggest number of outfits you have bought at one time?
MH: Probably seven.
The Reflector: The team rides the bus for away matches. What happens on the bus on those long road trips?
MH: I study until motion sickness sets in. I also watch movies or sleep.
The Reflector: Are there ever any practical jokes going on? MH: On the last trip we had a charter bus instead of the MSU bus and the bathroom smelled horrible. A couple of the girls locked Kelly (Willinger) in there. It was funny for a little while.
The Reflector: What is the worst road trip in the SEC and why?
MH: Arkansas. The fans and the band really taunt you.
The Reflector: They bring the band to volleyball matches?
MH: Most schools in the SEC do.
The Reflector: What was the worst taunt you’ve heard.
MH: A group started chanting “HubenAwful.”
The Reflector: If you could stand across the net at any opponent and spike on them, who would it be?
MH: Anyone in a Gator uniform.
The Reflector: If you played another sport, it would be:
MH: Basketball. I played in high school, but quit to concentrate on volleyball.
The Reflector: If you could go one-on-one in hoops with anyone, who would it be?
MH: LaToya Thomas.
