Skee-Phi Weekend will be held at Mississippi State University from Wednesday, Nov. 13 through Sunday, Nov. 17. The Kappa Beta chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Inc. and the Lambda Eta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. will host this event. A Phi A and AKA are the oldest African-American fraternity and sorority in the United States.
Widely known as the Phirst Phamily, these two organizations have come together on college campuses across the United States to host visibility celebrations like Skee-Phi Week or Phirst Phamily Celebration.
“We (the sorority and fraternity) are both very proud of our history,” Angela Maxwell said. “We are the premier organizations from which others have been established, and we pride ourselves in that. We are both approaching 100 years in existence, and that in itself is worth celebrating.”
During the visibility week, the Miss Black and Gold Pageant will be held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Lee Hall auditorium.
“We will also be serving our campus community by presenting a Safe Sex Campaign,” Maxwell said. “We hope to assist MSU Student Association by raising money to support the United Way. We will also have social events for students, including a Greek show that Friday night that will feature step teams from Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley State University and the University of Southern Mississippi.”
Greeks from other colleges and universities will also be in attendance.
“We are planning a pre-game tailgate for the MSU vs. Tennessee football game and a post game party,” Maxwell said.
The festivities will conclude with a chapel service, which will be open to the public, Sunday at the Chapel of Memories at 6 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend the festivities for this celebration.
