A new online store gives students the opportunity to order everything they need without leaving their dorm or apartment.
Chris Sammons, the founder and CEO of Dormzy, said the idea came out of the need Sammons saw for students without cars.
“I went to the University of Kentucky, and there were local convenience stores, but I didn’t have a car. Everything in the local stores was overpriced, so my mom would ship stuff to me,” Sammons said.
Sammons said students can also save by avoiding local taxes. This can be particularly helpful to students in areas with particularly high taxes.
“The whole reason we are here is to offer affordability and convenience to college students,” Sammons said.
One problem is the convenience already offered by in-dorm stores such as The Village, Bailey Howington, freshman biology major, said.
“They have this kind of stuff in the dorm and they have it at The Union, so I’ve never had a problem finding stuff like that,” she said.
While that may be true, the convenience offered by an online store would be useful to many too busy to shop for themselves, Alyssa Leard, sophomore civil engineering major, said.
“For engineering students, it would be good, because you don’t have to go anywhere, you can just do it all here,” she said.
Many people on campus are busy with projects and can use any help they can get, Leard said.
Sammons said he has seen his company grow and foresees it being successful.
“This fall, we will push out 8,000 to 10,000 boxes, and we have shipped to over 150 schools in all 50 states,” Sammons said.
As far as shipping goes, Dormzy has not seen any major issues, and is able to reach 80 percent of the population of the U.S. within two days.
“People are always trying to save money and are just busy nowadays, they don’t have time to go out and do things, but everyone has to eat, you know,” he said.
Dormzy tries to work with students to make sure the items they need are available through the site.
“If there is a suggestion from a college student, then we’ll add it to our list,” Sammons said.
