Mississippi State University’s newly established show choir – Blitz – will have its debut performance at the Miss Infinity Pageant on Friday at Dorman Hall Auditorium at 6:30 p.m.
The show choir, an ensemble of musicians who combine vocal music with choreography, consists of 24 members from different majors and backgrounds. The group will perform two smash-hit Broadway numbers: “Seasons of Love” from “Rent” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from “Hairspray.”
Giselle Thibaudeau, the adviser for Blitz, said she is very excited about the choir’s debut performance.
“The group has been working exceptionally hard throughout the past month in preparation for some spring performances,” Thibaudeau said. “It is truly amazing – the energy and talent of this group of students is truly uplifting. I am sure you will see and hear of them more and more in the upcoming months.”
Maureen Hughes, freshman accounting and theatre major as well as co-founder and vice president of Blitz, said she is looking forward to the performance.
“We are all super-excited to perform for the first time as a group,” she said. “Our goal is to have everyone in the audience singing, clapping and dancing along with us as we finish with our upbeat closing number. We can’t wait for the MSU student body to see us.”
Fellow Blitz member James Hemphill, freshman accounting major, said he is not only excited about the choir’s first performance, but also the music that they are singing.
“Both songs that we’ve worked on so far are great songs, and I like them a lot,” he said. “One is an up-tempo song with plenty of dancing in it, and the other is a slower song with long notes and solid harmonies. The contrast between the songs makes up a great performance.”
Hemphill said he enjoys being part of the group.
“It’s a lot of fun being around the diverse personalities and everyone seems to be getting along great,” said Hemphill. “We all usually leave practice with a smile on our faces; at least I know I do.”
Gil Maneclang, junior finance major, said he enjoys coming to all of MSU’s campus activities.
“I love to support MSU by attending a variety of events, like the show choir,” Maneclang said. “Even though I do not know a lot about show choirs, I know that the students worked hard and their performance will be exciting and entertaining for everyone.”
