Red Hill City, the five-piece indie-rock band from Brandon, brings to Bulldog Bash a more alternative type of music, leaning away from anything mainstream.
Their sound can best be described by taking their top four musical influences and combining them together, which are Death Cab for Cutie, Appleseed Cast, Coldplay and Radiohead.
Ill Attempts, their debut CD, was released four months ago and includes seven original songs, which they mostly plan on playing at the Bash. Ill Attempts took about six months to produce. The final recording took place at Coolwaters Studio in Clinton, followed by a visit to Memphis, Tenn., where they improved their sound at the Euphonics Mastering House. They also have around 13 new songs and one cover song they enjoy playing, so the set list is unpredictable. Red Hill City is currently in the process of putting together a full length album that should come out next summer.
“I guess you could say our fan base consists of mostly indie kids,” said Joseph Regan, lead guitarist. “We have a lot of great fans that are very supportive and very interested in what we do.”
Red Hill City has been together for about a year and a half. They are comprised of Ben McCain playing the keyboards, Gant O’Brien on the bass, Josh Myers doing drums and percussion, Tyler King singing vocals and playing guitar and Joseph Regan on the lead guitar. Although they are not a Christian band, some of them met through churches. Three of the members were previously in other bands.
Throughout the metro area, Red Hill City has played at various venues such as Headliners, a Relay for Life event, The Joint and Brandon Day Festival. They have also made their way inside W.C. Don’s located in downtown Jackson.
“I’ve been listening to a lot of Meryll lately,” Regan said. “We’ve actually played a few shows with them in Austin, Texas.”
Red Hill City also got the opportunity to meet one of their influences, Appleseed Cast, in Los Angeles, Cal.
If Regan could swap careers with any other musicians, he said it would definitely be Coldplay, since they are one of the biggest bands in the world at this time. Avid indie fans might also like to know that if Red Hill City was on a road trip and were forced to pick between the bands Wolf Parade and Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade would be their choice to insert into the CD player.
In five years, Red Hill City hopes to be in full gear and successful.
“Some of us are still in school,” Regan said. “But we’re pretty much prepared for anything.”
