After losing last year’s Magnolia Cup to in-state enemy Ole Miss, the Mississippi State men’s golf team exacted revenge and won both the Cameron Cup and the Magnolia Cup at the Old Waverly Golf Club in neighboring West Point.
The Cameron Cup goes to the best overall team in the one-day event, whereas the Magnolia Cup goes to the alumni who won.
State won overall by nine strokes. The Bulldogs posted 1-under par.
State’s Noah Goldman led all golfers with a 3-under-par 69. Jake Lambert’ finished with a round of 2-under 70.
Matt Fast and Carlos Sainz, Jr. rounded out the Bulldogs scorecard posting rounds of 74.
The win is the second during the fall season for the State golfers.
Goldman’s score included four birdies and only one bogey on the day. Lambert also notched four birdies.
Sainz had a score of 2 under heading into the back nine but found trouble down the stretch.
Ole Miss played an 8-over par 296 on the day and were led by David Marino’s even-par round of 72, which was good enough for third overall.
“It’s always good to win,” head coach Clay Homan said. “The guys are playing with confidence, but we need to continue to work hard for our next tournament.”
The Mississippi State alumni came away with the Magnolia Cup trophy once again this year, winning by 11 strokes 242 – 231.
The men’s golf team will return to action next week when they travel to Ruston, La., to play in the Squire Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by Louisiana Tech and the Squire Creek golf club.
