Mississippi State University fans should be careful not to underestimate the University of Toledo in the upcoming football matchup. Last week’s contest against Arizona State demonstrated flashes of our team’s potential, but that potential has to be cultivated and built upon week after week. We need to take what we learned from that game and apply it moving forward, but the primary focus right now must be on Toledo. They are a physically tough, competitive team that will push Mississippi State to its limits. If we do not put our best on the field, Toledo is more than capable of pulling off an upset of their own.

Another concern is the timing of this game, as it falls just one week before the start of SEC play. With a tough conference schedule looming, there may be a temptation to treat this as a “look-ahead” game, but that would be a mistake. The SEC opener versus Florida is undoubtedly crucial, but Mississippi State must stay focused on the task at hand. Overlooking Toledo while thinking about SEC competition could lead to an upset that would set a bad tone for the rest of the season. Every game matters and the Bulldogs must approach each contest with the same intensity and preparation, regardless of who is next on the schedule.
