Mississippi State University fans should be careful not to underestimate the University of Toledo in the upcoming football matchup. While it might be tempting to overlook a team from the Mid-American Conference (MAC), it is critical to remember Toledo nearly won the MAC Championship last season. Toledo has built a reputation as a formidable program within the MAC, and this season, they are shaping up to be just as dangerous.
It is important to point out that Toledo’s strengths should not be dismissed simply because they come from a smaller conference. Just last weekend, Northern Illinois, another MAC team, shocked the college football world by taking down No. 5-ranked Notre Dame in a game that no one saw coming. While it may seem like an isolated incident, this upset serves as a sobering reminder that underestimating mid-major programs can have serious consequences. Mississippi State cannot afford to walk into this game with the mindset that it is a guaranteed victory.
This season brings new challenges for Mississippi State under the guidance of our new head coach, and every game offers an opportunity to grow and develop. Last week’s contest against Arizona State demonstrated flashes of our team’s potential, but that potential has to be cultivated and built upon week after week. We need to take what we learned from that game and apply it moving forward, but the primary focus right now must be on Toledo. They are a physically tough, competitive team that will push Mississippi State to its limits. If we do not put our best on the field, Toledo is more than capable of pulling off an upset of their own.
Another concern is the timing of this game, as it falls just one week before the start of SEC play. With a tough conference schedule looming, there may be a temptation to treat this as a “look-ahead” game, but that would be a mistake. The SEC opener versus Florida is undoubtedly crucial, but Mississippi State must stay focused on the task at hand. Overlooking Toledo while thinking about SEC competition could lead to an upset that would set a bad tone for the rest of the season. Every game matters and the Bulldogs must approach each contest with the same intensity and preparation, regardless of who is next on the schedule.
This game against Toledo will serve as a test, and Mississippi State should approach it with the respect and seriousness it deserves. The Rockets are no pushover, and they will be coming to Starkville hungry for a statement win. If Mississippi State wants to avoid a potential upset and remain undefeated, the team must remain focused, disciplined and prepared to fight for every yard. Victory is attainable, but only if the Bulldogs bring their full attention and effort to this game.
The Bulldogs will face Toledo Saturday in Davis Wade Stadium at 6:30 p.m. CDT and is streaming on ESPNU.
