Mississippi State University baseball run-ruled Alcorn State 11-0 in Tuesday night’s game at Dudy Noble Field.
The Bulldogs remained defensively tough throughout the matchup, not allowing Alcorn State to score a single run through the seven-inning game while Mississippi State racked up 11 runs.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Bulldogs earned a 3-0 lead to start the game. Sophomore outfielder Dakota Jordan singled to left field, which resulted senior infielder Amani Larry and sophomore infielder David Mershon each scoring a run. Jordan then scored on a ground out by senior infielder Connor Hujsak.
Jordan went 2-for-3 against Alcorn State with a triple and three RBIs. In the bottom of the third, Mershon scored on Jordan’s triple. Following that play, Jordan scored on a sacrifice fly from junior outfielder Bryce Chance, increasing the Bulldog lead to 5-0 against Alcorn State.
Freshman outfielder Ethan Pulliam started at second base and made the most of the opportunity. Before the end of the night, the freshman secured an RBI, two hits and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Pulliam scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning, and senior infielder Logan Kohler scored on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Joe Powell.
On the mound, junior pitcher Pico Kohn started, going for three innings and stricking out five players. The victory against Alcorn State marked his first win of the season. Pitchers junior Karson Ligon and sophomore Gavin Black had a chance to pitch as well, and both earned a strikeout while on the mound. Following their strikeouts, junior pitcher Colby Holcombe and sophomore pitcher Logan Forsythe had three strikeouts within the sixth and seventh innings.
The bottom of the fifth inning was the last scoring inning of the game. Pulliam singled to left field, running Chance home. Kohler scored on a throwing error, while freshman infielder Dylan Cupp singled to left field to score Larry, and freshman outfielder Michael O’Brien walked with the bases loaded, pushing Cupp to home plate.
Mississippi State Baseball will return to action Friday at 6 p.m. to kick off a three-game series against Auburn University for Super Bulldog weekend. Friday’s game will start Super Bulldog Weekend festivities. The series will be broadcast on the SEC network.
