Shortly after head coach Sylvester Croom threw his arms toward the sky in the thrill of victory, the north goal post got tackled by a mob of maroon and carried out of Davis Wade Stadium for the first time in four years.
It was a sight that Mississippi State faithful will cherish and an all too familiar scene for the then-ranked No. 20 Florida Gators, who dropped their fourth consecutive game at Scott Field 38-31 to the 24-point under-Bulldogs.
Mississippi State (2-5) countered the Florida Gators’ (4-3) Saturday afternoon in their first victory over a ranked opponent since the Bulldogs knocked off No. 15 Auburn in 2000.
That year the Dawgs also upset Florida.
“For me, this is No. 1 of all the games I’ve played in and of all the games I’ve coached, even the championship games,” a joyful Sylvester Croom said.
