People are dying in Iraq, and people in Starkville are noticing.
This Monday at 5 p.m. in downtown Starkville, two Mississippi State professors will hold one in a series of anti-war rallies. During this anti-war rally, people will remember all soldiers who have died and those who continue to die every day in Iraq.
The war in Iraq is one of the most contested issues of the past few years, especially in light of the recent election. It is doubtful that this anti-war rally will change the federal government’s policy on the war in Iraq and the war on terror.
But this anti-war rally is not about any “issues.” This is about reminding everyone that people are dying.
It is so easy to simply gloss over the headlines that pour in every day. It is so easy to turn away from war coverage on Fox News and CNN. It is also easy to get discouraged with the lack of protest against the war, especially if you do not agree with the war.
But there are people in Starkville who are exercising their right to free speech to tell people they believe that war-any way-isn’t good.
Supporting the troops is not only about buying car ribbons. Supporting troops is about remembering what they are suffering. It is about reaching out a helping hand to the families suffering from a relative gone to war.
And it’s nice to see people in Starkville who haven’t forgotten that.
