The Lyceum Series presented the Los Hombres Calientes Thursday night at the Hump. The performance ended yet another successful Lyceum Series entertainment calendar.
“I’ve been really pleased with the Lyceum Series this year, especially the Black Broadway performance,” senior David Brooks said.
Expectations were high for the Series’ last production. And Los Hombres Calientes, the Grammy-nominated and Billboard Award -winning duo, is known for not only meeting expectations, but surpassing them.
Based in New Orleans, this musically diverse band won the Latin Jazz Album of the Year from Billboard magazine, Best Contemporary Jazz Band by Offbeat and Album of the Year by Jazzuza.com. The group is known for its fusion of modern acoustic jazz, New Orleans soul, African beats and Latin grooves.
The Los Hombres Calientes’s latest album, Vodou Dance, combines sounds from Trinidad and Haiti to produce a voodoo-influenced music experience. The group draws from a variety of geographic regions. Because of this, the sounds of the Los Hombres Caliente appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners.
“My taste in music ranges from R&B to Rock,” Brooks said. “I’ve never heard the Los Hombres Caliente, but I really like jazz, so I’m sure I’ll like their music.”
The Los Hombres Caliente was not the only jazz artist that performed this year in the Lyceum Series. Nationally recognized jazz artist and double Grammy winner Dianne Reeves performed in October.
Along with Reeves and the Los Hombres Caliente, Hubbard Street 2, the Black Broadway, Minneapolis Guitar Quartet and the St. Louis Brass Quintet performed during the Lyceum Series.
