Mississippi State’s Percussion Ensemble will perform at the McComas Hall theatre Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
Faculty, student and guest performers will join the ensemble.
The event is sponsored by the music education department and led by professor Robert J. Damm.
Admission is free.
“[The audience] can expect to experience a wide variety of music from contemporary to Japanese pieces and also some Spanish pieces,” said Adam Dear, business information systems major. “I think the most interesting thing will be the variety of music that will be performed.”
Ensemble pieces will include “Japanese Impressions,” “Junk Funk,” “Vamos A Ecuador” for marimbas, and “Rock Trap” for body percussion.
Chad Austin of Forest, a senior music education major, will solo on xylophone in a sonata. “Especially suited for the McComas Hall location will be the performance of ‘Battle Stations II,’ an antiphonal work intended to be performed in the round with percussionists ‘stationed’ in four corners of the hall,” Damm said.
Unique instruments such as a thunder sheet, glass bowls, flower pots and elephant bells will be incorporated in “Canticle No. 1.” A dulcimer player will be featured with the ensemble in a hymn, and a Cajun piece will employ instruments such as a washboard.
“There’s something for everyone,” Bassford said.
