A seminar entitled “Tips for Landing the Job” is scheduled for Thursday, April 10, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is planned to be held in the Coskrey Auditorium in Memorial Hall.
The seminar is expected to address interviewing skills and techniques. Dr. Hank Flick was chosen by the event’s sponsors to speak.
Flick, a communication professor, has taught interviewing classes for 20 years. He said he conducts anywhere from 30 to 40 of these seminars for classes, organizations and businesses each year.
The seminar is sponsored by Delta Pi Epsilon and the Department of Instructional Systems, Leadership and the Workforce Development.
The publicity officer for Delta Pi Epsilon, Julie Joiner, explained why the lecture was being held.
“What our organization wanted to do was to offer a program to students that would benefit them and help them prepare for job searches,” Joiner said.
Flick said that approximately 42 percent of college graduates will not find a job. He stressed that the job interview is a critical element in obtaining employment.
Flick stated three questions that every employer asks in an interview:
1. Does this applicant appear to be college educated?
2. Has this applicant been trained in communications?
3. Does this applicant have experience in interviewing?
The purpose of this seminar is help students learn the important tips of participating in a good interview, Flick said. There are four things people need to remember on how to give a successful interview, he added:
1. How to be both personal and professional during the interview.
2. How to control the interview and direct the questions to your best qualities.
3. How to be analytical and to think logically and critically during the interview.
4. How to organize answers, make a point and put your best traits forward.
According to Joiner, this has been the first year Delta Pi Epsilon has held such an event. She said her organization wanted to hold more of these lectures in the fall and thanked Dr. Flick for donating his time. “He is a professor who really cares about MSU students,” Joiner said.
“Mississippi State has an obligation to its students, to teach and to inform, but also to prepare them for life following MSU,” Flick said.
