The Mississippi University for Women is scheduled to host the College Student Women Leadership Conference this summer. The conference, which is co-sponsored by the American Association of University Women and the MUW, has been planned for July 27-29.
One of the conference’s organizers and a business professor at the MUW, Dr. Maggie McClintock said that all college-aged women are invited to attend the event. Women who are enrolling in college for the next year are also invited, she added.
McClintock stated that the cost for the conference will be roughly $85. This fee includes the costs of room and board.
Shellie Solomon and Claudia Limbert are some of the speakers to be featured at the three-day conference. Solomon is a lawyer who previously worked for the Justice Department in Washington, D.C., while Limbert is the currently the president of MUW.
McClintock expressed her hopes for the event.
“I hope college women will attend,” she said. “It will help with personal development and leadership development. This will also give them the opportunity to hear women leaders established in education and industry.”
Susan Hall, one of the conference’s organizers and the president-elect for the Starkville chapter of the AAUW, said the conference is designed to help develop female roles as leaders. This is one of the first opportunities for the conference to be held in the Southeastern region and especially in Mississippi, Hall added.
The conference is usually held on a national level, said McClintock. There are only four sites for the conference in the regional level, and the MUW was one of those sites.
According to Hall, one of the main purposes of the AAUW is to work with students and women leaders.
McClintock reiterated this emphasis of the organization.
“The AAUW is devoted to the education of women and also strongly supports women’s rights,” said McClintock. “It has a long history in the state of Mississippi and is usually located on college campuses.”
McClintock also said that in order for someone to become a member of the AAUW, the individual must be a college graduate. She was quick to add that the organization does not discriminate by gender and allows men, as well as women, to join.
