During the first week of school, people walking by the University Florist between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. had the opportunity to participate in the Mega Back-to-School Giveaway sponsored by 91.1 WMSV. The main purpose of this event was to gain attention for the campus-based radio station.
“We’re trying to get more people to recognize that the radio station is here,” WMSV program director Daniel Morgan said.
The radio crew set up a wheel of prizes for students to spin outside of the University Florist. These prizes included cups, key chains, CDs, T-shirts and movie passes.
The event was announced on-air, and WMSV listeners were invited to stop by, but every student who just walked by was encouraged to spin the wheel as well, and everyone who participated won a prize.
The instant prizes were not the only things offered. Students were also able to sign up for the Mega Back-to-School Giveaway grand prize, which will be given away on August 29.
This grand prize pack contains an assortment of items, including a $200 spending spree in the MSU bookstore, two movie passes each week for a year, dinner for two every weekend for a year, season passes to MSU football games and a weekend getaway for two.
Freshman accounting major Dana Daigre was just passing by when she decided to spin the wheel. She agreed that this event would definitely make her more likely to listen to the campus station.
“I’m not from here so I really didn’t know of any radio stations in this area before now,” she said.
Emily Mathis, a freshman biology major, said that she was already a listener of WMSV, but she stopped by to spin the wheel and sign up for the grand prize as well.
“I just think it’s really cool that they do this,” she said.
WMSV has done other events such as this to gain attention in the past.
“Actually every year we do a big promotion to try to get students interested in the station,” news director Krista Wolf said.
Senior communication major James Eison participated in other events held by the radio station but said that this one is the best.
“This is really good; it’s definitely an improvement,” he said.
This event took about two to three weeks to plan and could not have been possible without the help of local businesses.
“We got on the phone to all of the restaurants and sponsors and everybody seemed real receptive to it, so we put together this huge package and now somebody can win it,” Wolf said.
