Seeking a place to hang out after hours can be a frustrating experience. One place starts to look like the next, and the crowd seems increasingly familiar. Dave’s Darkhorse Tavern, however, doesn’t quite fit the mold. Previously called “The Bully,” Dave’s Darkhorse Tavern was the first place in Starkville to have its liquor license. Its small, friendly staff and cozy, more serious atmosphere give it the steady clientele that has been flowing in and out of its doors for years.
One of the main reasons the Tavern has been set apart is the fact that it’s the only place in town that requires its customers to be over 21. Most of the regulars are graduate students or have jobs and are looking for a place to wind down and hang out rather than to party.
“There’s no bouncer, no fighting, and its not a pick-up joint,” said owner Dave Hood. “It’s just a great place to hang out with friends or bring a date because no one is going to bother you.”
Although the mood is a little less wild, it’s definitely not boring. With live music six nights a week, an open mic night and occasional poetry slams, there’s always something going on.
“Most of the musicians that play around town have their roots here because the people support them,” Hood said. “They clap and give them confidence, and it makes them learn more songs and get better. The root of this place is the music.”
Be that as it may, the entertainment goes beyond just the music. With TVs in all of the corners and at the bar, it’s a great place to watch “Monday Night Football” or any other games that happen to be showing. They also host fund-raisers for various events, including Last Year’s Jabberwock Review.
This semester, however, Darkhorse is starting something new. Mice racing events will be held at the Tavern beginning the Monday after Labor Day.
“It’s so much fun,” Hood said. “I think people are really going to want to see this.”
As for the food, Darkhorse Tavern doesn’t let you down in that area either.
“Our hamburgers are so big, they eat up everyone else’s hamburgers like Pac man!” Hood said.
Their hamburgers aren’t the only things they’re famous for; the pizza has quite a reputation as well. Even if you decide to try something else, don’t expect to leave hungry. Portions are huge and prices are low, and they’ll even deliver if you ask.
So, if you’re looking to wind down with a little more atmosphere and a little less chaos, Darkhorse Tavern is the place to go. You won’t be disappointed, and as Hood says, “The beer’s cold, the pizza’s hot . . . So, come on in!
