After what was supposed to be one of the toughest prediction weeks this season, the predictors came out smelling like a rose, and in the process, tightened up the race for first place. Ross Dellenger holds the lead at 28-14, while Craig Peters, Jon Hillard and Hank Allen (now on the DL) are tied at 27-15.
The eighth week of predictions may not be as tough last week, but promises to once again separate the men from the boys.
Will we finally start to see someone emerge? Or will this be another week where it becomes anyone’s ball game? Only time will tell.
The featured game once again this week showcases the second-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. OU plays host to the white-hot Iowa State Cyclones this weekend, in what could be a rain-soaked Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. A lot of rain is in the forecast in Norman, and could be an equalizer for the Cyclones.
ISU boasts one of the leading Heisman Trophy candidates in Seneca Wallace, but Wallace faces a might test this weekend against an Oklahoma defense that many consider to be one of the best in the country.
Alabama is coming off a bye week, and has had plenty of time to prepare for Mississippi. Brodie Croyle and the Crimson Tide are once again at home at Bryant-Denny, and are looking to avenge their loss to the Rebels last year in Oxford. The win over ‘Bama last year was the Rebels’ first in over ten years, but it will be no easy task repeating against the Crimson Tide this year, especially since the game is being played in Tuscaloosa.
The undefeated Ohio State Buckeyes are headed to Camp Randall to face the Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin is already 0-2 in the Big 10 after disappointing losses to Penn State at home and Indiana last week on the road in Bloomington. This week, Maurice Clarett and the Bucks pay a visit in what is a “must-win” for the Badgers.
After their 35-24 loss to Oklahoma last week, Texas and Chris Simms have to regroup and play a very tough Kansas State ball clup in Manhattan this weekend. After throwing three more interceptions against the Sooners, Chris Simms is pretty much out of the Heisman race now, but he better make sure he doesn’t let his team drop out of the race for the Big 12 South.
One undefeated team is sure to fall this weekend at Air Force. The Falcons and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish will put their unblemished records on the line, and possibly shots at a BCS game. ESPN GameDay has made the trip to Colorado this weekend, and a win for the Falcons could be the biggest in the Fisher DeBerry era, or maybe even school history. After their 36-7 drubbing of Florida last week in The Swamp, the LSU Tigers are hoping they don’t let down this weekend against a pesky South Carolina squad. Coach Lou Holtz always has his Gamecocks ready to play, and could put up a better fight than people think this weekend in Death Valley. LSU is still undefeated in SEC play, and have only lost one game this season. That loss came at Virginia Tech, who is now ranked third in the country.
