Jasmine Lee, a native of Kaohsiung, Taiwan and a senior at Mississippi State, competed in the Furman Invite located in Greenville, South Carolina. Lee, ranked eighth nationally, earned the singles title in Flight 1 on the last day of a three day tournament.
In the tournament, Lee went undefeated against top players from Florida State Universtity in the opening round, Clemson University in the second round and the University of North Carolina to win first place.
Prior to MSU, Lee attended a Chinese Cultural University in Taipei, represented Taiwan in the 2013 Fed Cup, had a career high in doubles ranking at number 283 in April 2013 and won six International Tennis Federation titles. Upon attendance to MSU, Lee had a career 84-71 of ITF singles and a doubles mark of 73-61.
During her time at MSU, Lee has captured the 9-16 seed at the 2016 NCAA Singles Championship, the first MSU men’s or women’s player to do so since 1998, competed in all of the major tournaments in fall 2015, including the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and the Oracle/ITA Master, awarded All-SEC First Team for both 2015 and 2016, captured ITA All-American, NCAA Singles Championship Participant and was named Southern Region Player to Watch.
Head coach Daryl Greenan said he is proud of the effort and result of his team this weekend and that knew it would be challenging with the level of competition they were facing.
“I am pleased with our 18-8 overall record,” Greenan said. “Our performance in doubles was particularly encouraging. I feel like we are further ahead than this time last year with selecting our doubles lineup and our level of play.”
Greenan gave Lee plenty of praise for her performance.
“Jasmine’s performance winning the top singles draw without losing a set and winning the top doubles draw with Lisa was a nice highlight for us,” Greenan said. “I am proud of how Jasmine is stepping up and taking her game and leadership role as a senior seriously.”
The next event for the women’s tennis team will be the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, the first major of the college tennis season. That event will take place Oct. 1-9 in Pacific Palisades, California.
