On Tuesday, Mississippi State University Student Association will hold senate and class council elections.
Halston Hales, SA vice president, said the election has 97 candidates competing for 48 spots, a record for this election. However, four of the spots do not have candidates. Three of these will be appointed, most likely from those who run but do not win. The fourth spot is Aiken Village, but Hales said since that it will face demolition in January, this spot may not be filled.
Hales said the election will be held online and SA will send out an email with a link to the voting portal. The portal will also being linked to the SA website at sa.msstate.edu and available on the students myState banner account. Voting will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
Results of the election will be announced by the Colvard Student Union on Tuesday at 10 p.m. Runoffs, if any, will be held on Thursday.
Hales said he is excited for the turn-out of contestants and thinks the senate will have an excellent year. He also said it is very important for all students to participate in voting.
“SA senate can do a lot on campus,” he said. “It governs the executive branch.”
He said the senate will also face several changes this year, including opening the meetings up to the public and adding ad-hoc committees.
Rhett Hobart, SA president, said the election will also include four referendums to the SA constitution; two regarding student fees in general, and two regarding the Green Fund sponsored by the Students for a Sustainable Campus.
Hobart said he hopes all students will participate in the election.
“We want to encourage all students to vote,” he said. “This is their chance to voice their opinion.”
