I have a three-fold comment. As everyone knows, the football season is coming to an
end and we have done horrible. It is not entirely Coach Croom’s fault. So before there is a public outcry for his removal, let’s look at the facts.
We as MSU don’t get big name
recruits because of our playing
from year to year. Players want
to win, not be on a terrible team.
I would venture that if those
recruits going to Florida, LSU
or any other successful program
would look at how much time
they would get, it would not be
much playing time at all. When
you are a school with several star
players, you can’t play them all.
At MSU if we had some star
players, they would get more time
than at the other schools because
we need some talent. I would
say that we have more talent at
this school than what is on our
field right now. So why not hold
open tryouts for the team? Also,
the fans of MSU, I believe, have
their faith wavering in the team
to win. There are so many factors
that go into winning other than
the coach. The most important,
though, is the drive and commitment
of some of the players is not
where it needs to be.
My second comment is on the
low environmental marks that
our school has received for several
years, not just this year. I know
they are true. It is not enough
for us to have a recycling program.
Other schools are treating
their runoff, treating gray water,
building more environmentally-friendly
buildings and [doing]
research. [Jim] Jones’, [director
of Mississippi State’s office of
campus planning and sustainability],
comments on our grade
are all right, but we need to be
more proactive than reactive at
our school. It is not enough to
be doing research to get a good
eco-grade. If you look at all the
criteria, we hardly meet any of
them.
Our students don’t get involved
either. When I was in [the Student
Association] senate, I tried to pass
some environmentally-friendly
bills; most did not pass. The
ones that did have not had any
response by any group on campus.
I encourage all the students
who do care to do something
on campus. We need to [do]
an about face and stop being a
wasteful college.
My third and last comment
is on the campus parking getting
tricky [see Nov. 18 letter to
the editor]. I totally agree that
it is difficult to tell where you
can park on campus. I mean,
who thought of a sign with an
arrow on it saying north zone or
some other parking designation?
I mean that person really failed
to think about the confusion they
make sometimes. Where does
that arrow end? Where is my further
reassurance that I am parking
in the right area, like colored
paint for my zone color or a letter
designation in that space?
We really need some other
means of identifying parking
areas other than a sign. Lines
on some space really need to be
repainted so others won’t make
the mistake that we saw with the
faculty member. The boot should
be reserved for repeat offenders
and parking in handicap spaces
or in a non-parking space. So we
need some resolved parking for an
easier and more fun parking experience
on campus. Go Dawgs!
