A drunken driver overturned a pole in a 1 a.m. crash Thursday,.
University spokesman Sammy McDavid said the police received a call and were told of a one-vehicle accident.
When the MSU police arrived on the scene, they found a white 1994 Grand Cherokee had crashed into a light pole at the intersection of Spring Street and Stone Boulevard, McDavid said.
Police found the driver had sustained no injuries, McDavid said. After further investigation, the police administered an intoxilizer test, which the driver failed.
McDavid said the driver has been charged with DUI first offense as a misdemeanor.
“You see those things particularly around weekends around athletic events,” McDavid said.
Bob Johnston, interim director of the physical plant administration, said the pole sat on university property, but he did not know the severity of the damage.
He said whether the individual will be charged for the pole depends on the circumstance and recommendations by administration.
Johnston did not know when a new pole could be installed, but said measures would be taken soon.
Johnston said: “Sometimes you have to stabilize (the pole) temporarily and then rebuild it later. It depends on what is connected to the pole.”
