A boil water notice that was issued Thursday for Starkville residents was lifted late Monday afternoon.
Scott Thomas, chief water plant operator for the city of Starkville, said the boil water notice was issued on Thursday afternoon when a water line was struck by construction equipment, causing the line to lose water pressure.
“We issue a boil water notice any time one of our lines loses pressure,” Thomas said. “It is a purely precautionary measure.”
Thomas said the notice was issued in the city’s newspaper as well as on Starkville’s website.
Samples of the city’s water were taken and sent to the Mississippi State Department of Health laboratories where they were checked for E. coli bacteria, Thomas said.
City officials received word late Monday afternoon that the samples were free from E. coli, and the boil water notice was lifted.
Thomas said the line that lost pressure was located near Old West Point Road, and the notice to boil water was issued to all residents living north of Pat Station Road. He said the line was struck by a contractor’s construction equipment while digging a culvert.
