The Alumni Association will hold Mississippi State University’s 132nd birthday party today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Junction.
Jimmy Abraham, executive director of alumni activities, said he is excited about celebrating the event with the MSU community.
“The Alumni Association wanted to celebrate MSU’s birthday with everyone who cares about our university with free food, fun and entertainment,” he said.
Abraham also said this year is the fifth year Cadence Bank in Starkville has sponsored the event.
The event is free and open to the public. There will be complementary hamburgers, chips, cookies, soft drinks and MSU ice cream provided.
Dining services has also baked a giant cake to serve during the party.
Junior geosciences major and Alumni Delegate Anne Elise Parks said she will be attending the event.
“I always look forward to MSU’s birthday celebration. I remember last year we had a massive M-State logo cake that was three tiers high and fed hundreds of people,” she said.
The event will also have entertainment sponsored by Campus Activities Board.
Jamie Davis & Soul Gravy will be performing a mix of folk, soul and country music. There will be an opportunity for free T-shirts during the party.
Also representatives from the Athletic Department will be on hand to give away 132 tickets to the 4 p.m. baseball game against Southeastern Louisiana University.
Junior communication major Jennifer Wilson said tying in MSU athletics with the birthday party is a great way to get students involved.
“I love to watch MSU baseball and how great is it that it is connected to the 132nd birthday bash,” Wilson said.
This party is to celebrate the 132 years of excellence lived by this university. Freshman business major Marcus Ruffin said Mississippi State has had a great history.
“This birthday party is probably the biggest one I will ever attend – 132 years of excellence,” he said.
The Alumni Association wants students to recognize the great history of MSU, and there is no better way to preserve it than by having a huge party.
“It is important to keep track of MSU’s birthday because it is part of our incredible history.” Parks said. “If we don’t preserve and respect it like it deserves, then no one else will.”
Abraham said he is very dedicated to serving this university’s alumni and students. He said he is excited about the upcoming event and extends his invitation to all students.
“We want to invite everyone to come join us as we say, ‘Happy 132nd birthday, Mississippi State University,'” he said. “We have accomplished many things during these past years, and our future is very bright. For just a few minutes, let’s all come together and say thanks to our great university that has given all of us so much.”
