Mississippi State University baseball (27-14, 12-5 SEC) takes game one of their double header to win the series today against the University of Alabama (15-24, 2-15 SEC) by a score of 4-3.
After two scoreless innings, things began to heat up for both teams. Then in the third inning, Alabama jumped out to a 3-0 lead. MSU then scored a run of their own in the bottom of the third inning. First baseman Brent Rooker hit a double and then shortstop Ryan Gridley drove him in from second base on an RBI-single.
MSU then tied the game up at three in the bottom of the fourth inning. Harrison Bragg started the rally after reaching first on a fielder’s choice. Right fielder Tanner Poole then hit a single and sent Bragg to third. Second baseman Hunter Stovall stepped up and sent a single through the right side and that drove in Bragg. Jake Mangum then singled to left field driving in the tying run.
MSU took the lead in the fifth after left fielder Cody Brown singled into left field, he then advanced to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt from designated hitter Hunter Vansau before being hit home by an RBI double. Lovelady hit the double just inside the left field foul line.
MSU then loaded the bases but Hunter Stovall struck out and center fielder Jake Mangum hit a grounder that bounced off Tanner Poole’s foot, ending the inning and MSU left three runners stranded, a theme that MSU continued throughout the game as MSU left ten runners on base during the game.
The rest of the game was relatively quiet with no runs being scored by either team after the sixth inning.
Starter Cole Gordon went four innings, throwing 68 pitches (39 strikes), and gave up three hits, three runs (all earned). He struck out four of the 18 batters he faced and issued four walks. Peyton Plumlee pitched 3.1 shutout innings, only giving up two hits and striking out two batters. Riley Self then closed the game for MSU. He went 1.2 inning, and gave up no hits or runs. He struck out four batters.
In the batter’s box, Cody Brown led the Bulldogs going 3-4 from the plate, including a double. MSU saw hits from around the entire order as their leadoff batter, Jake Mangum, their three-hole hitter, Ryan Gridley, their six-hole hitter, Josh Lovelady, and their nine-hole hitter, Hunter Stovall all recorded an RBI.
Game two of the double header will start at 8:05, where Jacob Billingsley will get the start on the mound for MSU. MSU will be going for the sweep.
