Wow. This recent uproar about the opinion section has moved me to a point where I feel like the other side should be speaking up. First off, I want to give props to Jed Pressgrove for his articles. And secondly, Josiah Meints, you need to take a break from your, apparently, extremely serious and important life.
I don’t know what goes on in every college student’s life, but for me and many of my friends, life is pretty busy. Busy with as many as 19 hours, one if not two part-time jobs, internships, studying and constantly being bombarded by violent news coverage and tragedy around the world. When I pick up a Reflector, I look forward to the opinion section because I know that it’s going to have a light-hearted piece about everyday life that will take my mind off the real world.
Seriously, chill out. I don’t know why you’re getting so worked up. I guess it’s because this section is actually witty and full of humor that is obviously above your level of understanding. There was even a disclaimer at the end of the mascot story stating that it was meant to be satirical in nature (that means a literary work that allows people to laugh at themselves and their way of life). If you are only looking to read pretentious, boring drool, pick up a Wall Street Journal or, like Jed mentioned in his article, The Economist.
A good writer is able to evoke emotions in his readers that they didn’t know they had. Obviously, Jed did just that. You’re just upset. You didn’t know you were lacking in humor and wit yourself. Kudos Jed, keep up the good work.
