Greg Martin’s Mississippi State men’s golf team fired a final-round 303, the best outing of the tournament for State, to finish in 13th place out of 15 squads at the Matlock Invitational. The tournament, which consisted of 54 holes over two days, began with two rounds on Monday and concluded with a single round on Tuesday at the par-72 Grasslands Golf and Country Club in Lakeland, Fla.
Tulsa won the event, finishing two strokes ahead of Virginia Tech. Colorado finished in third place, five shots back, while Alabama finished fourth.
Florida Southern’s Steve Sokol fired a 71 on the final day to finish one shot ahead of Tulsa’s David Inglis for individualist honors.
Veteran ball-striker Codie Mudd paced Mississippi State by firing a final-round 76 to finish in a tie for 33rd place. Mudd shot rounds of 74-77 on Monday.
Joe Deraney shot the best round of the day among MSU golfers, a two-under-par 70, to rebound nicely from a 78-84 on the previous day. Deraney tied for 46th place.
“Joe had a super round for us,” Martin said. “He played really well. That was an outstanding effort on a difficult course.”
Newcomers Eoin Barton and Craig Horrocks finished in a tie for 48th place and a tie for 52nd place, respectively. Juco-transfer Kellen Maurer finished in a tie for 60th place.
“Most of our guys played really good except for a couple of holes, where they would shoot a real high score,” Martin said. “That really makes it difficult to shoot low rounds.
“Those big numbers add up, and it really hurts us. But I feel like we are getting closer.”
Mississippi State will return to action in two weeks, participating in the LSU Spring Invitational.
The event will take place March 1-3 at the University Club in Baton Rouge, La.
