There is plenty to do this weekend at MSU with the activities of Super Bulldog Weekend and all it has to offer. However, many students don’t realize the history behind this weekend-long event.
Super Bulldog Weekend was initially Super Saturday, a one-day affair in 1986, as a springtime homecoming for alumni and fans. It was essentially just football, baseball and pig cooking, and has grown since with anywhere between 15,000 to 20,000 people on campus for the weekend, said associate athletics director Mike Nemeth.
He said the weekend is for alumni who have the chance to come back to campus in the spring. “It’s a weekend where they can enjoy as many athletic activities and fun as possible,” Nemeth said.
Several traditions take place each year such as the spring football game, baseball game, men and women’s tennis, and the Fellowship Christian Athletes rally.
Libba Andrews, the associate director for alumni activities, said, “Many of the colleges host breakfast for their alumni along with class reunions, the Bulldog Fan Fair and the Friday night pig-cooking.”
