The Starkville Police Department is awaiting results from a DNA analysis taken from a person of interest in the attempted sexual assault of a female jogger on University Drive on Sept. 12 at 5:15 a.m.
Josh Buckner, Starkville Police Department detective, said no specific details can be released while the investigation is underway. 
“We have a person of interest pending DNA results,” he said.
Lieutenant Troy Outlaw of Starkville Police Department said a search warrant was issued to collect the DNA from the suspect.
David Lindley, Chief of Police of SPD, said the crime lab had a backlog of cases, which means the results could come in at any time.
“We did take what we hope are suspect’s DNA from the victim, and we had developed a person of interest early on that we took samples on,” he said. “We sent those to lab for comparison. As of (Wednesday), we had not received any results back.”
Lindley encourages students to continue to use caution when walking at night and in early hours.
“We just are asking people to walk together and not alone during darkness hours until we get this resolved,” he said.
