After a groundbreaking debut, Norah Jones has returned with her talent for another round of sweetly satisfying melodies in Feels Like Home.
Her sound has been slightly altered, but it is still full of that untouchable beauty that is at the heart of her music.
The album opens with a lighthearted piece that carries you away with its rhythmic calm and soothing acoustics. Fittingly titled “Sunrise,” the song is a great way to start the album as well as your day. “The Prettiest Thing,” a mellower track, highlights the beauty of Jones’ grace on the piano.
The entire album is a complement to Jones’ vocals. The clarity and soul that enriches her voice produces an enchanting effect.
Feels Like Home embraces a good deal of collaboration. Musically, Jones is often accompanied by The Handsome Band. “Creepin’ In,” the most upbeat composition on the album, features a duet with the legendary Dolly Parton.
While Jones still retains her signature style, Feels Like Home wanders toward a sound that has jazz meeting a country undertone. The influence isn’t huge, but the album is a better reflection of Jones’ Texan roots.
Not every song will capture your attention, and perhaps some flavor is needed at times. But as a follow-up to such a monumental album, Feels Like Home doesn’t mask any of Jones’ talent as a musician. Her manipulation of the piano and the character of her soulful voice create a place of sweet escape.
Come Away With Me proved a tough act to follow-the album earned her five Grammys, including one for Album of the Year-but Jones has challenged her success with yet another canvas of her artistic expression.
